Universal Audio Shockmount for UA Mics, Black is the Universal Audio shockmount for UA microphones, finished in black. It suspends the microphone in elastic so vibration travelling up the stand does not reach the capsule.

A shockmount does one job: it stops mechanical vibration reaching the capsule. Footsteps, desk knocks, and the low-frequency rumble a building carries all travel up a stand and into a rigidly mounted microphone, where they arrive as thumps that no filter removes cleanly.
Suspending the microphone in elastic breaks that path. The elastic is compliant enough that vibration coming up the stand loses most of its energy before it reaches the body of the microphone, while the microphone stays where it was aimed.
A rigid mic mount is the alternative when isolation is not the priority. It holds the microphone firmly and takes up less room, which suits live use, tight positioning around a drum kit and situations where the stand is not being touched during the take.

If the stand can be knocked, if the floor transmits footsteps, or if the microphone sits near anything that vibrates, then yes. Stand-borne rumble arrives as low-frequency thumps that a high pass filter only partly removes, and it is recorded along with everything else.

Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by M.T. “Bill” Putnam, the engineer who built the first recording console with integrated equalization and effects sends, and who designed the 1176 and the 610. The company was revived in 1999 by his sons and now does two things: it still hand-builds analog hardware in California, and it licenses and models the classics from Neve, API, Manley, SSL, Lexicon, Studer, Ampex and others rather than emulating them without authorization.

A shockmount suspends the microphone in elastic to isolate it from vibration travelling up the stand. A mic mount holds it rigidly, takes less space and keeps aim precise, but passes that vibration through.
